Summary
This scoping review explores the research landscape on public perspectives regarding the ethical challenges of AI, analyzing 64 publications from PubMed® and Web of Science™. The study examines the motivations, stakeholders, and ethical issues identified in this research. Innovation and legitimation are highlighted as key drivers for public engagement in discussions on AI ethics, with secondary motivations including education, democratization, and inspiration. Politicization is a less frequent focus. The participants studied include the general public, professionals, AI developers, industry managers, students, scholars, consumers, and policymakers. Commonly addressed ethical concerns involve human agency, oversight, privacy, and data governance, while issues like diversity, fairness, societal well-being, transparency, and accountability are less emphasized. This review illustrates how public involvement in AI governance is operationalized in research and highlights the interconnectedness of ethical concerns, societal structures, and institutional norms that support responsible AI development.
